ON PENANG’S WORSHIPS TRAIL
Offering the best of Asia, Penang’s streets of harmony reflects the colorful heritage of her many races and the pride of her people. Visit the world’s 4th longest statue of The Reclining Buddha at The Wat Chayamangkalaram. This Buddhist temple is reminiscent of Bangkok’s many wats, the intricate interior finish of vibrant colors and designs is a sample of Thai architecture. Go across the street to Dharmikarama Burmese Temple, built in 1804 with a pair of elephants guarding the entrance, a Boddhi tree within the pagoda grounds and a wishing pond. Next, we proceed to Kapitan Kling Mosque, named after the Indian Muslim merchant, “Kapitan Keling” (headman) Caudeer Mohudeen who built it in the early 19th century. It features an ochre yellow facade and dome-shaped minaret reflecting Moorish Islamic influence. Tourists must be properly attired when entering the mosque. Along the same street is the Kwan Yin Temple (also known as the Goddess of Mercy Temple), believed to be the oldest temple in Penang, built in the 1800s by early Chinese settlers. A little further along is the Sri Mariamman Temple, Penang’s oldest Hindu temple, built in 1883, filled with colorful statues of Hindu deities. Among the priceless possessions of this ornate building is a statue of Lord Subramaniam richly decorated with gold, silver, diamonds and emeralds. Finally, visit the Kek Lok Si Temple. This is perhaps the finest Buddhist temple in South East Asia standing majestically on a hill in Ayer Itam. Completed in 1905, the temple was built in tiers with the beautifully crafted “Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas” took more than 20 years to complete. The temple also features gardens, a turtle pond, shrines and beautiful sculptures.

With 1181 hectares of forest and 1381 hectares of wetlands, the Park's ecosystem is a diversity of habitats with hills, sandy and rocky beaches, streams and coastal forests, representing much of the natural habitats of Penang. As a metropolitan national park, it has the potential for world heritage listing. Many species of flora and fauna - including rare and endangered ones - thrive here, barely 45 minutes from Georgetown city centre. Apart from marine life, there are insects, mammals & resident migratory birds that frequent the mangroves & mudflats. Take a stroll along the jetty and a boat ride to a beach area to start your trek. There are rest areas along the trail therefore the trek is not difficult. Stop by the old light house, built in 1883 & still operational today. The light house is open to visitors to have a good view of the area. Please bring along water & wear comfortable walking shoes for your trip to the National park.
