PENANG - DAY EXCURSIONS 2011 Part 2

PENANG TRISHAW TOUR WITH LUNCH
Ride through the streets of old Georgetown on a trishaw with your guide, providing commentary on the places of interests. Photo stop at CHEONG FATT TZE MANSION (also known as the Blue Mansion) – built over a span of seven years from 1896-1904 by teams of master craftsmen from China. Continue ride through Armenian Street where the remake of the movie “Anna & The King” was shot. The trishaw ride also passes by the Syed Alatas Mansion and Sun Yat Sen base – these are shop houses of the late 19th century. Stop by the PERANAKAN MUSEUM – a mansion cum ancestral temple for the Chinese Kapitan that showcase the opulent lifestyle of the Peranakans and their many customs, traditions with displays over a thousand pieces of antiques and collectibles of this unique community. You will also visit the KHOO KONGSI – a building featuring a magnificent hall embellished with intricate carvings and wood work. Take a walk on CHEW jetty the biggest waterfront settlement in Georgetown. Chew jetty was created in the middle of the 19th Century & is the last community clan’s jetty. Here we find a community that has existed over hundred of years, suspended in time above the tide lines. Finally, we proceed to KAPITAN KLING road, also known as the streets of harmony. This is a place where houses of worship representing various faiths are lined up along an axis; the St. George Church, Kwan Yin Temple (Goddess of Mercy), Sri Maha Mariamman Temple & the Kapitan Kling Mosque. They were all built at around the same time in the 1800s, indicating the surrounding areas were themselves multi-racial and multi-religion long ago. Tour ends with a lovely set lunch at a local PERANAKAN restaurant, a cuisine that is full of flavor & spices. Transfer via car/van back to your hotel after lunch.
Notes:Tour departs daily from Georgetown and Ferringhi Beach hotels and include lunch at Peranakan restaurant and include trishaw and entrance fee to Khoo Kongsi & Peranakan Museum.

BACK STREETS & LIVING CULTURE OF GEORGETOWN
This is mostly a walking tour. Please wear comfortable walking shoes & light cotton attire. Meet your guide at the hotel lobby early morning for the following tour highlights: visit the joss maker (open from 08:00 – 11:00am, on weekdays only and subject to weather condition) - these handmade joss sticks are known as incense burners; commonly burn by the Chinese during prayers at Temples and extensively used in East Asia and South East Asia. Produced from sandalwood powder paste, the joss-maker moulds paste onto long bamboo sticks. These sticks are then left to harden on a rack for a few hours before leaving to dry completely in the sun for 2-3 days. Joss making is very much dependent on the weather. (Note: the process cannot be shown if it rains). Across the street to the joss maker is the Kwan Yin Chinese Temple where one can buy the joss stick & burn it at the temple. Next, we visit the Sri Maha Mariamman Hindu Temple built in 1833 by the association of 'Chettiars' (Indian moneylenders) of early Penang. The temple features the Hindu goddess Mariamman in her many incarnations. The complexity of Hindu mythology is reflected in the sculpture (gopuram) which is over 23 feet high and features 38 statues of gods and goddesses over the entrance. We move on to the Kapitan Kling Mosque, built in 1801, named after Caudeer Mydin Merican alias Kapitan Kling who was the headman at the time. He brought in builders, Masons and stones from India for the building of this magnificent moorish styled mosque. Tour continues to the wet market of Campbell Street to have a peek at the spice trade, watch how spring roll skin is made, pass by the Indian florists and sample “TEH TARIK” – traditional pulled tea, Malaysians’ style of having tea break by the hawkers’ lane.

MANGROVE FOREST & ORANGUTANS
Depart early morning from Penang to BUKIT MERAH Orangutan Island – this is a 5-acre rehabilitation center & preservation facility where the orangutans roam free. This unique island serves as a breeding sanctuary in peninsular Malaysia as well as conservation, research & education center to better understand the threatened species. Venture from the main jetty at Marina Village of Bukit Merah Laketown Resort on a lake cruiser boat across to the orangutan island. At the island, you will be taken through the 100-meter steel walkthrough “cage tunnel” to get up close & personal with these primates. After the orangutan experience, tour continues on a short visit to the TAIPING ZOO before your lunch break at a local restaurant. After lunch, we drive for half an hour to the mangrove forest of KUALA SEPETANG, a small remote fishing village. This is one of the best managed tract of mangrove forest in the world covering an area of over 40,000 hectares. The mangrove forest swamp is home to multitudes of tree species, birds as well as marine life. It also offers a rich supply of “bakau” timber, of which 80% is used to produce charcoal on a sustainable yield basis in a nearby factory using traditional method. The mangrove is also an important site for coastal migratory water birds as well as a support to a viable breeding ground for some of the endangered bird species in Malaysia. At low tide, the common sight is fishermen sorting out their catch for the day & nearby factories processing salted fish.
